Of Scent and Sound

Perhaps no two elements trigger our memory as strongly as scent and music. We'll hear the chorus of a beloved song or catch a whiff of a familiar aroma and, in an instant, find ourselves swept back in time. Both can ignite feelings of warmth and happiness, but also that of the bittersweet.

The early nineties, with the explosive Seattle music scene that defined an era, conjures up pure nostalgia for many. Dirt and Nevermind, bursting with exuberance as well as a cornucopia of darkness, could be metaphors for the Emerald City herself. An area isolated and cloudy, with bountiful forests and lush foliage – and rain, rain, rain. Rebellion melodically intertwined with an an energy entirely fresh, exhilarating, and unvarnished. Within a few short years, the musical revolution was over, vanishing as quickly as it emerged. Darkness won the fight, but the world is better off because of the abundance of creativity we were blessed with, the effects which still resonate today.

On the surface, candles and "grunge" may seem like an unlikely pairing, but the backdrop of pre-tech boom Seattle is ripe with earthy inspiration. A little dirty, a little clean, with notes of petrichor and post-rain white florals, 1992 is a dichotomy representing vitality and rebirth. A dewy, tranquil escape born of nostalgia.

Burn in good health.
